#Special Meeting on Syria Favors Political Solution to Conflict

Rome, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) Participants in the special meeting on Syria, held today in the city of Lucca, agreed on the need for a political solution to the conflict in that country, Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said.

The official made the announcement at a press conference after the meeting with his counterparts from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Also present at the meeting were the heads of diplomacy from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada and Japan, which, along with Italy, are members of the Group of 7 (G-7).

Alfano noted that the starting point must be a lasting, effective and sincere ceasefire by all parties involved in the framework ‘of a political process based on a new constitution that will lead to new elections’.

He added that the prevailing opinion regarding Russia ‘is to try to involve it in the solution to the problem’.

The Italian foreign minister predicted that it would be a very complex negotiation that will have a ‘very important’ moment at Wednesday’s meeting in Moscow between U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
